Our Vision for Science
At Longfields, we aim to give children the tools they need to thrive in a world where Science, Technology and Engineering (STEM) are rapidly growing industries. We want children to consider how they can use scientific knowledge in their lives both now and in the future to develop a lifelong love of science learning. We aim to encourage all children to explore the world around them, using different methods of scientific enquiry to answer their questions and grow their understanding of the world.
Science at Longfields is good when...
- Children have fun in lessons
- Lessons are related to the children's interests and their real world experiences
- Children learn practically, interacting with real life objects
- Children have input into their curriculum, working with professionals to tailor it to their needs
- Children share their ideas without fear of making mistakes with misconceptions identified and quickly addressed
In order to achieve this we will...
- Provide opportunities for children to have input into the science vision and curriculum.
- Provide an engaging curriculum that works alongside the termly topics in each year group
- Carry out regular monitoring activities to maintain high standards in teaching and learning
- Share good practice across the school
- Encourage self evaluation by both teachers and children to inform future sessions
- Provide well maintained, up to date resources to support learning
- Provide teachers opportunities to develop their subject knowledge

Science Club
We are now running an after school science club for years 4 to 6. We will offer this to younger children later in the year. This week we investigated how a paper flower opens in water and tested which shape opens the fastest. This would also be a great investigation to try at home.
Science at Home
Alongside the specific home tasks that are set for children in their classes as part of their homework grids, the Primary Science Teaching Trust have designed some home learning experiments that the children can try to further their interests. They are designed to be easy to do at home, fun, and accessible for everyone so that children of different ages can work together on them as a family.
You can find a selection of them below, or find the whole selection at Science Fun at Home.
Wow Science is another fantastic collection of resources that is regularly updated and also contains activities from other STEM subjects, particularly coding.
Science Careers
To help acheive our vision and show our children the value of science in their lives beyond school, we would love to hear from any parents that are working in STEM subjects that would be happy to help us in school. This could be anything from coming into school to help with science lessons and investigations, to talking to children about the job that they do and how they use science in their lives. If this is something that you would be able to help us with, please contact one of the science coordinators on the email addresses below.

Skill Progressions
Below is a file showing the skills we will build in science at Longfields and how they will be progressed through a child's time at school.
