DESIGN and TECHNOLOGY
We value Design and Technology at Longfields Primary School as it contributes to the development of the whole child emotionally, aesthetically, intellectually and socially. It creates in the child, a sense of enjoyment and purpose and provides children with a unique way of perceiving themselves.
The purpose of Design and Technology is to give the children the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for them to express their responses to ideas and experiences in a visual or tactile form. It fires their imagination and is a fundamental means of personal expression. We aim to develop this in our children at Longfields Primary School.
While it is essentially a practical subject, design and technology should also provide opportunities for reflection and, with increasing sensitivity, children acquire the ability to make informed, critical responses to their own work and that of others.
AIMS and PURPOSES
Through the teaching of Design and Technology we aim:
HOW WE IMPLEMENT
We follow the National Curriculum Guideline and these are incorporated into our individual topics. Design and Technology is also taught both as a discrete subject, within our topics and with cross-curricular links. The children at Longfields are also given many opportunities to gain different experiences through working individually, in small groups or on a whole piece of work.
ASSESSMENT
Ongoing teacher assessment has always been an integral part of good practice at Longfields Primary School. Assessment at Longfields Primary School is to aid future planning and to enable the teacher to match the tasks set with the needs and abilities of the pupils. Progress of the children’s work should be recorded within each child’s individual design book. We encourage the children to evaluate their own approaches, performance and practice. The children are encouraged to talk about their own work and the work of others.
